The print industry faces the challenge rapid technological change and for Uniprint, investment in the latest technology has been a prerequisite to sustain market leadership in product innovation. Some recent technology-based installations are detailed below.

MAN Roland Uniset 75 web press
Installed in November 2007 — and joining an existing Uniset 70 press — the Uniset 75 printer will produce telephone directories, commercial brochures and magazines. At 48 metres long and three storeys high it is one of the largest printing presses in the country and has the capacity to print 37,000 pages of heat set, high resolution print per minute. Being heat set, the machine produces a crisper, higher resolution print quality, even on porous material such as newsprint and will

allow high volume print customers the option to choose between cold set or heat set, depending on the required print quality and substrate used. The press has doubled existing capacity and will allow for faster turnaround times for existing telephone directory customers in the domestic market and in several SADC countries. In addition, the speed at which we can print large quantities will shorten the lead time for print deadlines, an important consideration for publications that rely on advertising for their revenue.

HP Indigo ws4500 digital press
In line with the global implementation of digital technology in the print industry, Uniprint installed an HP Indigo press in February 2008 for the production of high quality labels for the short-run, on-demand market. Image files are saved in memory so repeat runs are identical, without any machine, ink adjustments, etc. Other key features of the press — apart from the minimal set-up time — are the personalisation and variable data capabilities that are ideal, for example, for pharmaceutical customers.

The HP Indigo is coupled with a Digicon finisher that produces online foiling, varnishing, laminating and die cutting. The press is also ideal for sample and promotion runs and small quantities for market testing programmes.

Comco MSP ProGlide press
Installed in 2006, the Comco ProGlide nine-colour press meets demand for a variety of unsupported filmic labels - printing on a wide range of substrates (from 12µm unsupported film to carton board) without manual adjustment — at speeds of up to 230m/min. Fast turnaround times and superb quality (via automatic registration and servo controls) make this equipment ideal for the supply of wrap around labels in the carbonated beverage, dairy and fruit juice sectors and for aerosol can wraps and shrink-sleeve labels.

Karlville shrink-sleeve and hot tunnel equipment
In 2004 Uniprint installed three Karlville shrink sleeve forming machines — at the time the first of their kind in the country — with capabilities to supply high quality, UV flexo printed sleeves with full 360-degree graphics for top-to-toe decoration of irregularly-shaped containers. This was followed in 2006 with the installation of a shrink tunnel which — other than allowing pre- and post-production testing — also offers customers the opportunity to run marketing trials to test acceptance of new label and packaging developments.

Hunkeler Variweb finishing press
The Hunkeler machine was installed in 2006 to tap into the rapidly growing direct mail and variable data markets. The Hunkeler offers customers limitless possibilities in paper engineering, creative promotions and branding through the finishing of documents containing variable data, for example, subscription forms, membership cards, integrated removable labels and stickers, credit card and utility statements. The machine offers hugely improved speed-to-market (flexibility, short set-up and make-ready times, etc) for customers in advertising and

Drent Vision presses
Installed in 2004 and 2007, Uniprint’s eight-colour and six-colour Drent Vision presses represent some of the most advanced narrow-width web press technology available and are configured for the value-added forms, direct mail and security printing markets. With servo-driven technology, they feature ultra-short make-ready times, reduced material wastage on start-up and accurate and consistent colour registration. Other features included computer-to-plate (CTP) technology to speed up job turnaround, CIP 3 colour-
