The Universal Print Group – now re-branded as Uniprint – was originally established as Universal Printing Works by Virjee Mehta in 1926. Virjee left India to work in South Africa in 1914 as a compositor for Mahatma Gandhi on his newspaper Indian Opinion and twelve years later established his own printing company.
He was later succeeded by his sons Nautamlal and Kantilal and it was Kantilal’s three sons and daughter who joined the company (Harish and Bharat in 1978, Yatish in 1980 and Aasha in 1987) to form the current executive team, later joined by Colin Baxter-Bruce (ex-Flexoprint MD) in 2002.

This third generation of management transformed the family-owned business into a corporatised structure through the influence of various private equity investment partners (and currently Kagiso Trust) and through the acquisition of the Belmor Group, Flexoprint, Everton Print and Davbar, all of which also brought additional specialised technology into the business.
Presently, with manufacturing operations based in Durban, regional sales offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town and employing more than 700 people, Uniprint is South Africa’s largest empowerment printer. |
